Robert Downey, Jr. on: Prison and Rehabilitation Reform
Robert Downey, Jr. paid Alberto Torrico a surprise visit in Sacramento last Thursday to discuss prison and rehabilitation reform. As Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Prison and Rehabiliation Reform, Alberto Torrico is committed to finding real solutions to fixing California's prison system.
The California prison system has a failure rate of 70% - over two-thirds of released inmates return to prison within three years. As millions of California taxpayers struggle to navigate this great recession, more than 165,000 prisoners are warehoused in a system that costs an average of $48,536 per year for every prisoner. In 2008-2009, it cost more to send a criminal to a California prison that a student to Harvard University.
It's time for real reform and real solutions to California's prison system crisis.
