About Alberto
Alberto Torrico – California’s Choice for Attorney General
Alberto Torrico has quickly become public safety’s choice to become California’s next Attorney General – earning the support of two of California’s largest public safety organizations, the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) and the California Professional Firefighters. And, with the growing support of the labor community, Torrico – the son of immigrant janitors and a former workers’ rights attorney – is positioned as the best candidate for California’s working families.
For Torrico, using the law to secure justice is not an abstract theory – it is a tool to transform and improve the lives of every Californian.
A True American Story
“My name is Alberto Torrico and I have seen and lived the incredible transformative power of the law.”
Alberto Torrico, who serves as California’s Assembly Majority Leader, is the son of immigrant parents – his father born in Bolivia and his mother’s family from Japan. Growing up in a humble neighborhood in Fremont, California, Torrico’s parents worked long hours as school janitors to provide a better, safer life for their children. While in high school, Torrico worked the night shift alongside his parents, earning money that would help him become the first member of his family to graduate from college. With the support of his family, Torrico earned a law degree from the University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco and later built a successful legal practice specializing in labor law and workers’ rights.
Born into a neighborhood where too many kids fell through the cracks, Torrico has learned through firsthand experience the importance of protecting civil rights and seeking justice for all California families – many of whom, much like his parents, have no one else to fight for them. Alberto Torrico is running for California Attorney General to make sure every Californian has the right to public safety and personal security – in our homes, our streets and our schools.
A Passion for Public Service
"Alberto Torrico has made protecting the public his top priority. He is the best choice for California's top law enforcement official."
- Ron Cottingham, President, Peace Officers Research Association of California
Torrico’s passion for using the law to transform lives first inspired him to run for office in the East Bay at the age of 32. Torrico served three years on the Newark City Council before winning election to the California State Assembly.
As a State Legislator representing portions of Alameda and Santa Clara Counties (including San Jose), Torrico has held a number of key leadership posts, including Assembly Majority Leader and most recently, Chair of the Select Committee on Prison Reform. In his years in the Assembly, Torrico has built a distinguished record fighting for fairness and justice for California families and has earned a reputation for using the transformative power of the law to keep California families safe. Torrico has been named Legislator of the Year by the California State Firefighters Association, Peace Officers Research Association of California and the California State University Students Association.
In Sacramento, Torrico embodies the life experience of the emerging California majority. Torrico made history as the first member of the California Assembly to sit in both the Latino Legislative Caucus and Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. Torrico’s ability to build successful coalitions and bridge ideological barriers has led to the passage of 38 of the legislative measures he’s authored, with 27 of them being signed into law by the state’s Republican governor, including:
o Requiring 60 day notice for no-fault evictions of renters;
o Removing barriers to the development of affordable housing
for working families;
o Maintaining health care benefits for foster children;
o Protecting the assets of public, community hospitals;
o Preserving $50 to $100 million in funding for local transportation projects;
o Restricting the use of pesticides in day care centers.
Public Safety’s Choice for Attorney General
“Throughout his career, Alberto Torrico has been a strong, uncompromising voice for first responders, their families and the citizens we serve. He has stood with California’s firefighters in good times and bad and we are proud to stand with him.”
- Lou Paulson, President, California Professional Firefighters
As a candidate for California Attorney General, Alberto Torrico has won the endorsement of California’s two largest public safety organizations, the 62,000-member strong Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) and the California Professional Firefighters, representing more than 30,000 first responders.
These significant endorsements, along with Torrico’s long record of support for rank-and-file law enforcement, have helped coalesce dozens of local law enforcement organizations behind Torrico, including the Oakland Police Officers’ Association, the Los Angeles School Police Association, the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of Alameda County, the Contra Costa Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, the Fresno Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, the Fresno Police Officers’ Association, the Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers’ Association, the Ontario Police Officers’ Association, the Sacramento Police Officers’ Association, the San Bernardino County Safety Employees’ Benefit Association, the Deputy Sheriffs' Association of San Diego County, the San Jose Police Officers’ Association, the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of Santa Clara County, the Stockton Police Officers’ Association and many more.
Alberto Torrico is the choice of California’s first responders for Attorney General. And as a former workers’ rights attorney, Torrico has the strongest record of support for organized labor among the candidates for Attorney General. From his private career to the first days in office, Torrico has always stood firm to safeguard the rights of California workers.

A Personal Commitment to Justice
“My commitment to safety and justice is personal. For me, the law is not an abstract theory. I know firsthand how it can transform and improve the lives of every Californian.”
Alberto Torrico’s commitment to safety and justice is not just a professional goal – it’s a personal mission. His brother Fabian is a veteran San Jose Police Officer, a family connection that has long informed his commitment to rank-and-file law enforcement. His parents were immigrants who worked hard to give he and his brothers a chance to succeed. For Torrico, equal justice under the law is not an abstract theory – it is a tool to transform and improve the lives of every Californian.
A lifelong California resident, Torrico lives with his wife Raquel and their two children Mateo and Amy-Elyzabeth.
